What Happens After the Commonwealth Games?

The Premier’s unexpected canning of the ASF integrated Resort and its projected 13,000 jobs, has sent shockwaves through the community and city leaders are worried about  a post-games jobs and business slump.

The GC Bulletin reports “1500 staff and thousands of contractors finish with the Games organising body after the April 2018 event, while 1000 light rail stage 2 construction jobs are to end in January, along with 480 Games road upgrades workers. “ GCB 8/8/17.

Throw the state election into the mix between now and May next year and consumer confidence will be impacted which flows on to decisions to make big ticket purchases such as buying a property.

But of course there is lots of good news too with tourism continuing to boom and high hopes for a cruise ship terminal and light rail extension to Burleigh and the Evandale Cultural precinct still in the pipeline as possibilities.

Affordability and lifestyle factors will continue to attract new migrants and the media exposure from the Games will showcase those attributes. How attractive do we look compared to Sydney and Melbourne?

Let’s hope our underlying fundamentals are strong enough to sustain the Games momentum.
